BMI and Body Fat

Sorry I've been slacking on the posts lately....I feel like I don't have much to post about, unless you want weekly recaps of my Anatomy class? Nah, I'll spare ya.

Anywho, today I got my BMI and Body Fat measured at my gym. I've never done it before - only the online calculators like this one, and I've also had it measured on Wii fit ;-). I was just curious to see how it compared (can you really trust a video game system for your BMI?). Plus, it was free!

They ask you your weight and height, and also how much you exercise (this question was kind of embarrassing to answer....I'd MUCH rather have answered it back, oh....5 months ago?!). Then they use this handheld device. I measured 15.9% body fat and 18.6% BMI. I guess I don't really know the difference between the two? I know BMI is Body Mass Index, but...I guess I thought that measured your body fat?

It made me feel a little better because I've been pretty down on myself for not doing any cardio in the past few months. It seems like everything aggravates my knee. I probably should walk more (and swim....ugh, I wish I could get myself to like it because it's so good for you!). I know this might not have been entirely accurate, but at least it's a ball park figure.

Have you ever had your BMI or Body fat measured? I've always heard they are better indicators than weight, because of water retention and that sort of thing.

Well, I have my first test this weekend...wish me luck! Oh, and a little update on Teacher Guy - I just don't think *it's* there. We've been out 4 times...I think I would know by now, right? Of course it stinks (just typed "he stinks," LOL) because he's so sweet, cute, and everything I'd want on paper. But that chemistry thing....it's pretty darn important! Now I just have to find a way to tell him. I won't succumb to the post-it breakup a la Jack Berger, but is it okay to text that to him? ;-)

I don't know much about BF or BMI but I'm pretty sure most girls would love to have your stats! I think my BF used to be 18% when I was at my fittest. I'd be embarrased to know what it is now! I'm beginning to learn that you do not have to kill yourself at the gym to fit and you are living proof. Just do what you can do and stay consistent and you will stay healthy!!

Chemistry is very important. I don't have any "break up" tips since I've never done it before, but from what I've heard it's best to tell someone at least on the phone, if not in person. But I am definitely NOT an expert at all!! I'd totally want to text since I am not good at breaking news to people. Good luck, you'll do just fine!!

Hope you're having a great weekend!!

I've had both done- the body fat calculations are a better indicator of 'fitness' because muscle weighs more than fat, so for someone with a lot of muscle (ie, bodybuilders), their BMI might class them as obese, but they have low body fat percentages. They measuring things are not completely reliable- I thought they wouldn't be affected by water retention, etc, but apparently they are? I have NO idea what the 'healthy' amount of body fat to have is so the numbers mean nothing to me! Hehe. I just go by BMI.

Wow, you have a very great body fat%! My lowest was 18%... I'm currently back around 21% and trying to go back down. :)

Even if its not working out, I'm jealous - I haven't been on a date since like March! Lame.

That's too bad about the teacher guy but I definitely agree that if you aren't feeling it by now then he's not the guy for you. And the more guys that don't work out, the closer you come to the one that does :)

So I"m not doing my website anymore - I'm just going to be pretty busy with the move and it's just not for me. But I'll definitely keep reading your blog!!

So how close was the test BMI to the one's you have done online?

I can't push swimming enough. We unfortunately are in the same knee boat. I have finally accepted that I won't run again, nothing more than a 5 or 10K. And I'm okay with that because the doctor bills are getting so expensive and I'm just sick and tired (and embarrassed) to keep hurting myself.

Try this website: Swim Plan. It is a great way to get yourself motivated and push yourself when it comes to swimming. I don't know if this is any motivation but I lose weight faster and get muscle lines quicker with swimming than I do with any other sport--even running.

I've never had mine measured! There is a personal trainer at my gym that offers to do it for free but I am kind of scared to know them! Same reason I rarely step on a scale!

Sorry the teacher guy did not work out. I would probably call him and tell him rather than text him. I know texting is way easier though!

I have never had my Body Fat done but would love to know! I need to find out when one is going to be done at my gym again.

Body Fat % is literally how much of your body is fat. At ~15%, you are considered in a very desirable range.

BMI is a calculation based on your sex, height and weight. It is basically used to make sure you are at a healthy body weight. Anything under 18.5 is considered underweight - at your number, you are very thin.

BMI is controversial because people can have a BMI that suggests they are overweight, when it reality they weigh so much due to muscle.

BMI is a meaningless term, it is just a formula using your height and weight, it says nothing about your body composition (fat/muscle) or how fit you are. Body fat percentage is a much more meaningful value. However those had held devices are very inaccurate.

I've never had my BMI or BF tested.

that stinks about teacher guy! I don't know any text-tiquette. I can't text on my phone at all! I'm so behind the times.

Im not all too sure about BMI vs Body fat either, but it looks like your very healthy!!

You don't get your BMI "tested". It is a generic formula

I'm a big believer in 'it' ... it is either there or it's not.
