Calling All Students

So...I'm a little out of touch with being a student. I need help!

In college I always took notes by hand. I know I type faster than I write, but I retain things more if I write them out.

Problem is, this is creating LOTS of writing for my anatomy class!

How do you/did you take notes in classes? I feel kinda silly for even asking about this, but I just want to make sure I kick a$$ in my classes and I really have to stay on top of things.

*Date update - going to dinner with Teacher boy on Saturday. He is SO sweet....I talked to him on the phone and just kept asking questions. Like, he was actually interested in what I was saying! LOL.

The only thing is, I'm not sure if the attraction is there. I mean, he's very good looking, but for me it's all about personality. Usually I date good looking guys (or at least I think they are good looking, and my sister does, too, since she flirts with them - *Hi, Kristy!). However, one guy I dated was not my type (physically), yet I was SO attracted to him because he was hilarious! If you can make me laugh, you seriously have me.

Are you a looks person or personality person? (And don't be afraid here....I will admit that I can't imagine dating a guy under 5'11" because I'm 5'9". Good for Katie Holmes, but that just ain't me - vain as that sounds).

Hi Holly, thanks for visiting my blog the other day – your comment inspired a new post. On your Q re: taking notes at school, I just finished up a course myself and wow, have things changed since I was an undergrad! Taking notes on laptops is all the rage and voice recorders are making a comeback, too (you can transcribe the lecture later or just playback… could be time-consuming though, but likely good for info absorption). Me? I’m all about the pen-to-paper. I’m an old fashioned girl, I guess. Best of luck!

I always took notes by hand, but laptops weren't something that everyone had 6 years ago, either.

I remember it being hard to catch everything, though. I just had to abbreviate alot with some professors.

I take notes by hand, but go ahead and take notes with your laptop if you want. Lots of people do. I type faster than I write.

Have fun on the date!

I take handwritten notes- for some reason, the actual writing them down helps ingrain them in my brain better...

I am totally a personality person. Looks wear off pretty fast, though admittedly, it's what initially grabs my attention. Sense of humour is KEY!

Hey--I was never flirting with your former boyfriends, I was just trying to be REALLY friendly. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :) I am definitely with you on the looks vs. personalities thing. Even though I would say a great personality is a lot more important to me, that physical attraction still has to be there.

As for taking notes, I am also a huge paper/pen kind of gal. Though I like the idea of using a laptop. It would be so much quicker and look a lot neater. Good luck!

in my anatomy classes they gave us handouts since htey didn't want us to waste time drawing hearts and bones...but in my last physiological science class, hormones and the reproductive system...it was all written on the board/lecture style...so i had to take furious notes...AT 8 30 in the morning. i love rewriting things to help me remember.

I'm a combination: looks and personality are important! I dated a guy who I really related to and was very sweet, but couldn't get past that he was short and had bad teeth! I also dated a really hot guy (or I thought so) but he was very self-absorbed and not too bright. I am very attracted Andrew and he has a great personality too!!

Yay for dating!

Are there notes online at all? When I was in university I would print the slides or notes for the class and write on that. But I don't konw if there is any material for you like that. Otherwise... if it's about a topic from the textbook, the textbook might have notes or summaries on their website? That might help to have a basis for organizing your notes while you are in class.

I always used my computer for notes. It's faster. I sometimes brought my laptop to class, but after a while that just got tiresome. I was in a program where our slides were available so that made things easier for staying organized while taking notes in class. Honestly sometimes I just didn't take notes because the slides were available.

In politics class I just took notes, and they weren't that useful but the act of at least attempting to write them helped me to remember for sure.

True! 'Tis difficult to date a guy whose only 2 inches taller cuz you can never seem to wear heels! However...if they guy is the right one, try to throw Mr. Vanity out the window!! :P

I always take notes by hand so I can draw diagrams/pictures on the notes as well..I still say go by hand! If you want, you should record the lecture and then only write down the things that are actually important when you replay the tape!

I got nothin' when it comes to note taking advise. I can't even read my own handwriting!

Good luck on the date.

I haven't taken notes in awhile but I agree ... I always liked to write mine.

Good luck with your date!

Well, I can't give you any advice on the taking notes but of course, I always have an opinion on the dating thing :) Definitely looks are the first thing that bring you in but if their personality is lacking I'm gone. I especially realize this as I get older. I don't want a good-looking boring guy. But I'm also the same as you - I'm 5'8" and I want someone at least 5'10".

And in my experience, if you have to question the attraction it's probably not there. But it's good you're going out with him again just to be sure :)

I fail at notes too! Yours look great! If anyone gives you any great tips hook me up!!

Have you considered tape recording the lecture? I dont know your way of learning, but im gonna try that and see how it works! :)

I am a little worried about this when I start school too since it's been so long! I think I took notes by hand but some teacher had notes online already that I could just add to. I know what you mean about tthe boys. I need a really loud, funny guy since I can be shy so sometimes they aren't as good looking. If they are really hot but don't start conversation, I can't be with them!

i am a looks person followed by personality. I wouldn't continue dating someone just because they are hot. I got so lucky that hubby is a hottie and a sweetie

hey girl! I always typed up my notes when reading from a book and wrote them manually when I was in class.

Hope the date went well! I think both types of attraction are VERY important. I never needed the guy to be the hotest thing going- but I had to find him cute ;)

In my opinion, anyone who says looks don't matter is lying - there has to be some (even if minor) sort of physical attraction there. But personality is huge. I'm with you on the laughing, if a guy can make me laugh he's scored major brownie points!
