Preventative or Paranoid?

So I made an appointment to see the doctor on Thursday for my knee….it might be a bit premature and I know it’s going to cost me and arm and a knee (hahaha), but it’s just really, REALLY getting me down in the dumps. I just want to be sure I find the root of the problem and don’t end up with a chronic injury.

One thing about when I get injured is that my eating can go out of control. I either restrict or I binge…and I wish I knew how to change that. With my ED history, I really want to get back to exercising so that I am able to control my eating. I WISH my eating weren’t so dependent on being able to workout – especially run. However, it seems to work best for me. One day (because I probably won’t be able to run forever!) hopefully I will get there and be in control without having to run 20-25 miles a week.

During my running break, I’m challenging myself on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to eat only fruits, veggies and dairy as my snacks (what can I say...I get cranky without yogurt, lol). I eat lots of fruits and veggies during the day, but at night I often turn to processed snacks.

I’m doing this NOT to be restrictive, but I remember during my “Crap-Free Week” I didn’t binge because I was so FULL on fruits and veggies. Who wants cereal or a bar when they got a big ole’ belly bloated from veggies, right? I’m going to take pictures of my eats to hold myself accountable, too. I wish I were a more exciting eater so I could take pictures of all of my food all the time, but alas I am a creature of habit. So just be prepared to see the SAME pictures over and over and over…. ;-)

What about you? Do eating healthy and exercise go hand in hand for you? Or have you learned to find one without the other? If so - tell me your secrets!!

GREAT post Holly, and I am sorry you have to take a break, but it's for your own good, your health and your knee. It worked for Monica, maybe it will for you, too -- being sidelined by injury ended up leading to her success overcoming binge eating. I think making snacks fruits, veggies and dairy is A-OK. It's not restrictive at all; it's making good choices. 190 calories of a Luna bar don't fill me like carrots and a LC wedge or PB...but they're easy to grab. Too easy! Good luck and speedy recovery to you.

You aren't paranoid--you are taking care of yourself the best you know how. If getting a doctor to check it out will potential avoid any flairing up of the ED, then do it!

"I WISH my eating weren’t so dependent on being able to workout." I couldn't agree more. When I don't workout, I feel like I shouldn't eat at all...except for the bare minimum....Wonder if we will ever truly kick the ED thoughts. I am a million times better, but it is still there.

You should like you are doing a similar detox as myself. I am only snacking/eating all natural things. If i'm hungry--grab a carrot stick or an apple. It isn't like I am not eating...just only eating fresh things. Our bodies will thank us!

God...reading your blog makes me realize how similar we are. I honestly feel like I could have written this post. And I have to say, I am a bit reassured that I am not the only one out there with these thoughts and obsessions.

I know exactly what you're talking about. This week I'm trying to stay easy on my legs and it also has me worried about my nutrition. You're not paranoid - it's good to get stuff checked out early, before it turns into something that requires more than rest and stretching.

As for eating, I'm finding that I'm pretty good at staying healthy on days that I don't work out. A big part of it for me has been learning to listen to my body. Most of the time, when I feel the urge to stuff my face with food, I first ask myself if I'm actually hungry, or just tired/bored/stressed. It has worked wonders for me. Just asking myself a simple question really forces me to fuel my body exactly when it NEEDS to fuel.

Hi there, I know this is an odd thing to post on a blog, but I'm a health wroter for msnbc.com, and I stumbled across a post of yours while researching a nerve condition called meralgia paresthetica. I'm actually finishing up a story about that condition, and I'm looking to talk to folks who've experienced it, who can talk about what it feels like.

I'd love to hear from you -- if you're interested, please shoot me an e-mail at melissa.dahl@msnbc.com and we can set up a time to chat over the phone. Alternatively, you can call at 425.421.1433.

Thanks so much, and I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

I eat terrible. BAD. Fast food way too much. Last week I did not eat out once and i felt SO much better. My body didnt feel weighed down and i felt like i had more energy. Its weird but i can tell a difference from a good home cooked meal to drive through quickie lunch.

I'm gonna try and be better about bringing my lunch to work but its always a pain to pack it and figure out what sounds good for the next day. I change my mind alot so I'm afrid that i wont wanna eat what i packed. WEIRDO. LOL

I think your doing great. Eating healthy is good. I give you props! Going to the doc is good- you will probably sleep better at night knowing your good! :)

Holly,
You know that for years, I ran to eat. I thought I loved running for running's sake, but looking back, I know I was doing it to burn calories. Honestly, it took a while to break this habit, and to realize I was not going to gain 20 pounds if I stopped running. You just have to trust and listen to your body...if I can do it, anyone can. :)

Hope you get some answers from your doctor - so sorry about the knee pain!

Hey there! I'm FINALLY catching up on blogs, and I just wanted to say I hope your knee feels better soon! I know injuries sucks, and I also know how hard it can be to not eat so well when you can't work out. I like the idea of your ELC challenge, and your food looks great! I eat the same things everyday too, which is why it's been hard for me to keep up with the food pics on my blog :) Take care!
