Half-Marathon Training Plan

Ever since I was 16, I've run half-marathons without following a training plan. Why? Well I guess I could say I was young and stupid, but really I just didn't think to follow a program since I ran regularly. Now that I've started running again and feel like a new runner, I definitely am trying my best to be cautious and pay attention to the 10% rule with increasing my mileage. I also want to follow an actual training program this time to help prevent injury.

I've always used Hal Higdon's plans for my marathon training and I absolutely love them. Plus, I love him - he's a fellow Hoosier! :-) Here is the plan I'm going to use for my 1/2 in (eeek) 12 weeks! The only change I'm making is that I'm not doing the speedwork on Wednesdays. I guess I'm not too concerned with my time...I seriously just want to finish and would love to be able to run the whole race. That will mean the world to me after having not been able to run at all for a year!

If you run, do you follow training programs? If you don't run, are you a planner in physical things that you do?

There's a half marathon for the Chrons & Colitis Foundation that I'd like to try, but I've never run with a training program. I've also never ran anything more than 3-4 miles. Needless to say, I have a lot of work to do! I checked out the plan you have there but noticed it's for intermediate runners. I definitely wouldn't be able to run 14 miles the first week!

Kristen - I struggled with choosing between Novice and Intermediate, too....I might have to cut back the long runs for the first few weeks at least. Like you I'm not to the point where I can run more than 3-4 miles without stopping...but we'll get there! :-) Did you decide for sure if you're going to do your half?

Hey girl! That is so exciting that you have a half-marathon coming up- I know you will kick booty! I usually plan my workouts (except for the classes I teach- those are planned for me ;)

Good for you for running the half! I'm looking forward to hearing how it all goes:)

I am kind of training for my first half marathon (just sprained my ankle) and was using this plan/ the beginner plan. May I ask why you would use this one (or as you said to kirsten, the novice), if you're so experiences? I am only wondering because this would be my first race longer than a 5K and it makes me think I should cut back a bit.

Erica - I am such a planner, too! I wish sometimes I could be more flexible, but it's just not in me. :-)

Sagan - thank you! Fingers crossed...

Heather - Well, I thought about using the Beginner since I haven't run in a year (before about 2 months ago). On the other hand, since I've been running for so many years, I didn't really feel like the Beginner was right, either. So...I kind of compromised and am using the Intermediate but am just taking out the speedwork, since that will cut back on the mileage a little bit. It sounds like you've been running quite a few miles a week, though - much more than me! I really hope your ankle feels better...hope this helps and wasn't totally confusing! :-)
